Crusty White Bread


1 1/4 cups of warm water

2 tsp yeast

2 tsp sugar

3 - 3 1/4 cups plain flour

1 tsp salt

1 tbsp vegetable oil or butter 


Pour 1/4 cup warm water into a bowl and add yeast and sugar. Stir and wait for the yeast to froth up.

Add 1 cup of water and 1 1/2 cups of flour, stir until smooth and blended together. Add in all remaining ingreadients and knead for 10 minutes.

Return to an oiled bowl and cover with a tea towel. Allow to rise for at least 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Punch down, cut into halves.

Add extra ingredients at this point, cheese, sun dried tomatoes, herbs etc.

Manipulate into 2 smooth balls and put into oiled baking tin, cover with tea towel and allow to double in size again.

Bake in a pre heated over about 180 degrees for 20 - 25 minutes
